Talking about poker too much

23:39 in Poker

Clearly this is turning into a theme, but I turned $25 in to $75 tonight so I’m still on a poker mini-high. I’m concentrating on playing 10 player low limit hold’em at the moment, because although tournaments are more fun, the ring games can be pretty lucrative if you play them right..

The difficultly is the discipline. With 10 players at low limits you can’t play many hands, and you often only want to push if you have the absolute nuts.. There are a lot of players drawing on big hands and they often make them.

So basically I’m practising being patient, playing big starting hands only, and often folding them on the flop if they don’t look pretty great. It’s been hit and miss but tonight it went pretty well. Limit feels a lot more like grinding than no limit though, it’s certainly less fun!

Oh one thing about low limit - bad players. Playing against bad players isn’t as great as it sounds! Sure they make a lot of mistakes that can pay you, but man, they can very often play a bad hand badly, then suck out (make an unlikely draw) on the river and beat you against the odds! That really hurts, I can tell you…

On which service do you play poker? I’m poking around looking for ones that are friendly to Linux and/or Mac OS X users… Thanks for any advice, and hopefully your good luck streak will continue.

I play on Party currently. There’s no linux support, but they have more than 10x more players and cash games than any other poker site. The only site I know of that supports linux is pokerroom - because their client is java based.. I’ve no idea about OSX I’m afraid.

And hey, poker’s only about luck in the short term, right?

I’ve heard good things about the rake rebate on party, and I’ve heard good things about Empire. I’ve only personally played on Pacific, but that’s because I’m too lazy to move anywhere else.

The nice thing about bad players … if you play real tight, they don’t notice. So it’s boring and it takes patience, but eventually bad players will pay you off. I’ve tried Party, but was too inexperienced to profit from it, and lost money there and haven’t been back, but have done well at PokerStars.com. Also, for freeroll tournaments I really like PokerChamps.com. UltimateBet is a pretty good site. There’s one last site I really like for free tournament play, where you can win (and I have) real money … but I’m not going to say publicly what it is cause not too many of the partypoker crowd has discovered it yet, and I want to keep it that way.
