Review of the new iRiver

20:54 in Tech

H320The new iRiver H320 reviewed. The colour screen, USB host support and image viewing seem useful, but they’ve done away with one of the best things about the current iHPs, the LCD remote! Big disappointment :-(

    Must have H140.

    Must have H140.

    You know it makes sense.

Of course having already foolishly commited my choice of 40G music device to featureless hell (by buying an iPod), I must wait for the version that is to come *after* the H320, whatever or whenever that may be..

Thanks for buying crap so I can get something cool and gloat about it. As for what’s coming after the H320, this post on the Mistic River forums is says Toshiba is releasing a 60GB version of their 1.8″ drive (the drive used in both the iPod and the H100 series). So, I imagine that’s probably what will be next from Apple and iRiver. I looked around for other drives that would fit in the iPod and iRiver H100 series, and the only drives I found were slightly larger and probably wouldn’t fit without a little bit of manhandling.

I think once we get up to the following, I will be ready to upgrade again:
~100Gb drive. 60 isn’t going to cut it for me. 40 certainly isn’t enough right now. I saw the announcement about the 60G drives but wasn’t too excited - I was hoping to see a Moore’s-law-style capacity increase in this sector.
USB Host (that’s just too useful not to have. Being able to back up pics from my camera and files from my ipaq while on the move would be awesome).
LCD remote (why, why why did I buy an iPod when they don’t have this essential feature??)
I really don’t care about having a colour lcd, or viewing images, or playing movies. Not right now anyway.

    Ditto.

When people say things that I always think of Michael Moore in addition to Moore’s law. Since Mr. Moore is a rather *ahem* large man, the reference still works, but it’s a lot funnier that way :D.

That would be really nice, but I don’t think it’s essential. After all, that’s what your pea-sized laptop is for!

Because you fucked up, and now we get to make fun of you for it. Ha! Haha! Everyone point and laugh at the silly man! Silly man, silly man!

As appealing as the possibility of having an MP3 player with 30 minutes of battery life sound, I’m going to have to agree with you on this one as well.

    “sound” => “sounds”

I can’t type, and this page can’t preview. It’s a combination almost as deadly as Tom’s code and an OS without protected memory (albeit a less humorous combination).

To be able to use a PDA with the H140 would be great. Toshiba and Fujitsu make USB host PDAs, does anyone have more experience about this kind of combination.

Alternatively, does anyone have an idea whether it would be possible to “Bluetooth” an H140? Get a USB Bluetooth dongle and connect it up - would a PDA with bluetooth then be able to see the H140.

(the Toshiba and Fujitsu PDAs look good, but I’d really like something like HP4700, no USB host there). I know Bluetooth is going to be slower than USB, but still worth investigating. Or even a WiFi’d H140?!!

Grateful for any comments - don’t have the PDA yet so can’t start to experiment. If USB host is the only way, that would influence my purchase.

    Thanks
